‘Big Ideas’ Discussion Group: Diane de Ryss, Board Member of Options for Helping Residents of Ashland (OHRA) and Representative Pam Marsh, Oregon House of Representatives, District 5, will discuss new strategies to address homelessness in our community from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3, at the Ashland library, 410 Siskiyou Blvd. Located in the former Super 8 Motel in Ashland, OHRA is a resource center and low-barrier emergency shelter with 52 rooms for up to 72 adult guests. De Ryss will discuss who OHRA serves, emphasizing what makes the organization’s approach effective, specifically resource navigation, on-site support services, walk-in resource center, and a focus on keeping people housed, as well as data on outcomes achieved since opening the OHRA Resource Center. Rep. Marsh will focus the State’s role in addressing homelessness and on Oregon’s groundbreaking Project Turnkey. She played a key role in securing a $4.2 million grant from the state that OHRA used to purchase the Super 8 Motel and transform it into the OHRA Center. ScienceWorks Hands-On Museum: A variety of interactive science exhibits are available at the museum, located at 1500 E. Main St., Ashland. The interactive museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday to Sunday. Many exhibits will be modified to reduce touch surfaces — fewer hands-on activities — and increase physical distancing. Admission is $12.50, $10.50 for ages 2 through 12 and 65 and older, and free for kids under age 2, $3 for SNAP/Oregon Trail card holders. ‘Windows in Time’ local history lecture: As part of the free “Windows in Time” lecture series, Jan Wright, Southern Oregon Historical Society Archivist, will present “Wayward Girls of the Rogue Valley” at noon Wednesday, Jan. 4, at the Medford library, 205 S. Central Ave., and via Zoom. Jackson County has had its share of incorrigible girls. Wright will explore case studies of girls from the 1880s to the 1920s who just wanted to have fun and break away from social restrictions. ‘Songs for a New World’: Craterian’s Next Stage Theater Company will present “Songs for a New World.” This exuberantly tuneful, compellingly dramatic song cycle has been a perennial crowd-pleaser since its off-Broadway debut in the mid-90s.
